Advance Community Library

Our Policies

Collection Rating:

1. Our collection is rated according to the AR (Accelerated Reading) system used by the Advance RIV School.

2. Children’s materials are suggested for New Born to 6th Grade. They are housed in a separate room of the library away from YA and Adult Material.

3. YA books are housed in their own section, also using the AR rating system. These materials are suggested for Grade 7-12.

4. Adult books are housed in fiction and non-fiction sections in the library.

5. Age/Grade recommendation is just that - only a recommendation.

6. Age recommendation determination process will be published on our website and available upon request at the Front Desk.

7. Separate collections are available for children and young people, but it is not the responsibility of the Library, its Board of Trustees, staff or volunteers to determine what collection they should use or what item in the approved collection is suitable for an individual. Library staff does not know what you consider appropriate for your child and cannot be held responsible for their selections. Responsibility for a child’s reading must rest with the parent or guardian, not with the library.

8. Books are vetted by the Librarian and the Library Board.

Parental Determination:

1. Informed Consent forms will be available by request from the Librarian. They may be filled out by a parent or guardian only.

2. Forms are only valid for active library card carrying parents and children.

3. Forms will be valid for one year.

Patron Challenge:

1. A Parental Challenge Form will be available at the front desk BY REQUEST. They will cover books, events and displays.

2. Reconsiderations will be accepted only in writing on the provided form.

3. Form must be submitted to the Librarian. Only fully completed forms will be accepted for consideration.

4. Reconsideration requests can only be made by a parent or guardian who holds an active library card on behalf of a minor who holds an active library card.

5. Only one book/event/display reconsideration per form.

6. Reconsiderations will be reviewed by the Board at their regular monthly meetings.

7. Patron will be notified of the Library’s decision by a Board member or Librarian via phone or email provided on the form.

8. Reconsiderations will be disclosed in meeting minutes and on the Advance Community Library website along with their decision. The name of the challenger will remain anonymous.

9. Once a challenge has been made and a determination has been published, that particular book, event or display cannot be challenged for another year.
